Beyond The Lens: The Stories Behind the World's Greatest Shots
Mount St. Helens by Max Foster
I took this shot at the Johnston Ridge area that overlooks the beautiful Mount St. Helens volcano in Washington State. The area was devastated by the 1980 eruption, but has slowly recovered each year. In summer flowers bloom in abundance along the ridge, so I wanted to create a photo that contrasts the fresh growth against the desolate mountain. This was a challenging shot to get, as I used focus stacking with multiple exposures to get the extreme depth-of-field seen here. Nikon D600 | 16mm | 1/5sec | f/8 | ISO 100
